I’ve spent the last two years watching people obsess over the “perfect” AI side hustle. Courses about crypto. TikTok shops. Print-on-demand stores that nobody buys. Meanwhile, a quieter money stream has been hiding in plain sight—AI voice generation.
ElevenLabs has paid out over $5 million to voice creators in under two years. Real people. Real money. No equipment beyond a laptop. If you’ve been scrolling past voice AI because it seemed too technical, let me be direct: it’s not.
The barrier to entry is lower than you think, and I’ll show you exactly how it works in under 10 minutes of reading.
Why AI Voice Makes Sense Right Now
Here’s the situation: businesses need voiceovers. YouTubers need narration. Podcasters need editing help. Nobody wants to record themselves reading 5,000 words about “10 Best Keto Meal Prep Hacks.” They want to write it, generate the audio, and move on.
The demand is real. Freelance voiceover rates on Fiverr range from $50 to $500 per project according to recent creator reports. And the tools to deliver? Free to start.
The use cases become more nuanced if you think of translations – its not just entertainment, but capturing audiences globally means more money with more watch time.
ElevenLabs is the main tool I recommend for Seekers. The free tier lets you generate voiceovers without spending a penny. The Creator Plan costs £22/month—but you can downgrade after you’ve uploaded your voice and your earnings continue regardless.
Path 1: Freelance Voiceover Gigs (Fastest Results)
This is the “put money in your pocket this week” path. Zero upfront cost. You don’t even need to record your own voice.
How it works:
- Sign up for free ElevenLabs account
- Write or paste your client’s script (ChatGPT generates one in about 5 minutes if you need help)
- Select a voice style, generate the audio (1-2 minutes)
- Download and deliver via Fiverr or Upwork
Time per gig: 5-10 minutes after scripting. Total commitment: 2-5 hours per week if you’re chasing multiple clients.
What you’ll earn: £50-500 per project, depending on length and client budget.
The catch? Clients want quality. AI voices struggle with emphasis, speed variation, and commercial nuances. You’ll need to do light editing—tweaking pacing, adding pauses, maybe re-recording a clunky phrase. This isn’t “set it and forget it.” But for 5-10 minutes of work, the hourly equivalent is solid.
Path 2: Sell Your Professional Voice
This one’s different. Instead of selling your services, you sell your voice. Record yourself talking for 30+ minutes, upload it to ElevenLabs, and get paid every time someone uses your cloned voice. The recommended time is ~2hrs of clean audio.
What You need to start:
- A professional podcast microphone. This is the exact one I used. Cost £66. You can get decent ones starting £30.
- Simple vocal exercises.
- Define your niche- does your voice help businesses, ads, is it for ASMR. Take 30 minutes to record 4-5 sample voices and ask for feedback.
- Remember, the more different your voice sounds, it means the opportunity may be higher.
How it works:
- Sign up for Creator Plan (£22/month)—you can downgrade later
- Record 30+ minutes of clean speech (2-3 hours gives better quality)
- Upload and pass voice verification
- Tag your voice with descriptive labels (“calm narrator,” “energetic tech reviewer”). Use ChatGPT to define this after sending 1-2 minutes of audio.
- Get paid weekly via Stripe when balance hits $10
What you’ll earn: $0.03-0.20 per 1,000 characters generated with your voice. One user reported $200 in a single month. Blogger Lauri Immonen made $1,000 over five months with just two uploaded voices.
That’s genuinely passive income—upload once, collect indefinitely. The setup takes 1-2 hours. After that, your voice works while you sleep.
How it worked for me? I made a mistake of recording my voice in one go and sounded raspy and out of breath. Moreover, my enunciations is well lets say it needs work. My recorded income from 6 months below.
Path 3: Create Content
This one takes longer but scales further. Create faceless YouTube or TikTok content—AI-voiced narrations of listicles, top 10s, or educational compilations—and monetize through ads and affiliate links.
What You need to start:
- Pick a niche. Start with 10 niches. Use Youtube trends to whittle it down to 3.
- See what type of content, length of content makes sense. See if you can come up with at least 20 ideas on content in this niche.
- Use ChatGPT to then define a one-off brand style- not what you will say, but how.
The workflow:
- ChatGPT generates the script (5 minutes)
- ElevenLabs or Google AI Studio creates the voiceover (2-5 minutes)
- Pictory AI assembles the video (10-30 minutes)
Total time per video: 20-60 minutes.
This does require more work. But here is where automation helps!
Monetisation comes through YouTube’s Partner Program (once you hit 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours) plus affiliate links in descriptions. This path requires patience—you won’t see income for months. But once your library grows, each new video compounds on previous ones.
I’ve watched people flame out on AI voice in two main ways:
1. Generic prompts, generic results. AI voices sound flat when you give them walls of text with no direction. Keep prompts to 1-2 sentences. Tell it to sound excited, or slower, or like a tired Sunday morning. Brand-specific direction matters.
2. Skipping human editing. This isn’t ChatGPT for text where “good enough” sometimes flies. Voice clients notice bad emphasis. They’ll ask for revisions, and if you’re doing volume work, revisions eat your profit. Always listen to your output before sending.
What’s worth knowing
Voice AI agents (skip this unless you already have clients). You might see courses about building “AI voice agents” that handle calls for businesses at $500-2,500 per setup. People abandon these constantly because cold outreach to businesses is harder than the technical setup. Moreover, I dont recommend these because the regulations are constantly changing and I’m sure we dont want to cold call people. That is rude. So, unless you have existing business connections and are comfortable with the regulations and know your customers (I still say get a consent!), this path isn’t for you.
| Path | Setup Time | Monthly Cost | Earning Potential |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelance Gigs | 30 minutes | Free | $50-500/project |
| Voice Library | 1-2 hours | £22 (downgrade after) | $40-400/month passive |
| YouTube Channel | 20-60 min/video | Free tier works | Scales with content |
Worth it if: You want £500-1k/month side income with under 10 hours per week. You prefer copy/paste solutions over building systems. You’re comfortable doing light editing (or willing to learn).
Skip it if: You expect fully automated income without any marketing effort. You won’t do cold outreach for freelance gigs. You want results in days, not months.
I’ve been where you are—scrolling past AI tools because the jargon made my head hurt. But voice generation genuinely is the low-complexity entry point. You don’t code. You don’t need equipment. You copy, paste, generate, and deliver.
I’m going to write soon about the new innovations in this space -including AI agents, podcasts, watch out for more.
